Make description

Company Rolls-Royce was born three times:

1. Rolls-Royce Limited (1906-1973) is a renowned British car-manufacturing and, later, aero-engine manufacturing company founded by Charles Stewart Rolls and Sir Frederick Henry Royce in 1906 as the result of a partnership formed in 1904. The Honourable Charles Stewart Rolls (1877-1910) was an English motoring and aviation pioneer. He was the first Briton to be killed in an aeronautical accident with his designed aircraft. Sir Frederick Henry Royce (1863-1933) was an English engineer and car designer who, with Charles Rolls, founded the Rolls-Royce company. In addition to the company's reputation for superior engineering quality which has led to its epithet as the "best car in the world", Rolls-Royce Limited was known for manufacturing the high-powered "R" engines responsible for land and air speed records as well as successful performances in automobile racing. In 1971, Rolls-Royce was crippled by the costs of developing the advanced RB211 jet engine, resulting in the nationalisation of the company as Rolls-Royce (1971) Limited. In 1973, the car division was separated from the parent company as Rolls-Royce Motors. Rolls-Royce (1971) Limited continued as a nationalised company until it was privatised in 1987 as Rolls-Royce Holdings Plc. Rolls-Royce Holdings Plc. (Public limited company) (privatised 1987) is a British multinational public holding company that, through its various subsidiaries, designs, manufactures and distributes power systems for aviation and other industries. From 2003, Rolls-Royce Holdings Plc. exists in the market as holding company within Rolls-Royce Group.

2. Rolls-Royce Motors (1973-1998) was created in 1973 during the de-merger of the Rolls-Royce car business from the nationalised Rolls-Royce Limited. Company Vickers Plc. acquired the company in 1980 and sold it to Volkswagen in 1998. Company Vickers Plc. (1977-1999) was created in 1977 from the rump of Vickers-Armstrongs Limited following the nationalisation of its aviation, shipbuilding and steel businesses. Vickers-Armstrongs Limited (1927-1977) was a British engineering conglomerate formed by the merger of the assets of Vickers Limited and Sir William George Armstrong Whitworth & Company Limited in 1927. Vickers Limited (1828-1927) was a significant British engineering conglomerate. Sir William George Armstrong Whitworth & Company Limited (1847-1927) was a major British manufacturing company engaged in the construction of armaments, ships, locomotives, automobiles, and aircraft. Sir William George Armstrong (1810-1900) was an English industrialist, eminent scientist, inventor and philanthropist, who founded the Armstrong Whitworth manufacturing concern. V.W. (Volkswagen) (founded in 1937) is a German car manufacturer headquartered in Wolfsburg, Germany.

3. Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Limited (founded 1998) engineers, manufactures and distributes luxury automobiles and automobile parts worldwide. Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Limited is a wholly owned subsidiary of BMW. B.M.W. (Bayerische Motoren Werke AG) (founded 1916), is a German manufacturer of automobiles, motorcycles and bicycles with headquarters in Munich.
