Lotus Cars is a British manufacturer of sports and racing cars, famous for its Esprit, Elan, Europa and Elise sports cars and for the highly successful Team Lotus in Formula One. The company was founded as Lotus Engineering Ltd. by engineers Colin Chapman and Colin Dare in 1952. Anthony Colin Bruce Chapman (1928-1982) was an influential English design engineer, inventor, and founder of Lotus Cars. The four letters in the middle of the logo stand for the initials of company founder, Anthony Colin Bruce Chapman. Team Lotus, which was split off from Lotus Engineering in 1954, was active and competitive in Formula One racing from 1958 to 1994.
